Last weekend, Meghan Sussex (née Markle) and Serena Williams took another step towards making their close friendship more well known.

A report from Page Six includes some photos of the Duchess of Sussex having a nice afternoon lunch with the bonafide hall of famer and multi-time Olympian.

Page Six explains that the two celebrities grabbed a bite at Tre Lune, a restaurant specializing in Italian fare.

While we don't know Meghan and Serena's relationship with Gene Montesano, the owner of Tre Lune, images from Page Six's article show the two giving Gene and his wife a big hug on the way out!

Interestingly enough, the lunch date occurred the same weekend Meghan updated her Instagram stories with videos and photographs of Auntie Serena spending time with Princess Lilibet.

A high profile friendship becomes more publicized

Previous reports highlight that Meghan Sussex and Serena Williams have actually known each other since 2010.

However, the two did not become friends until they reconnected at a Super Bowl event in 2014.

As their relationship grew stronger, Meghan and Serena began relying on each other as sources of support as they dealt with their own versions of criticism.

Now, the Duchess and 23-time Grand Slam Champion are so close that Serena and legitimate viewed as one of Princess Lilibet's aunties.

Recent clips from Meghan's new series "With Love, Meghan" show that the Duchess may need Serena's emotional guidance sooner rather than later.

While discussing her surname with Mindy Kaling, Meghan clarified that her last name isn't Markle anymore. In fact, Meghan, Prince Harry, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, have actually been using the Sussex surname since last summer.

"It's funny you keep saying Markle . . . You know it's Sussex now," Meghan began. "I share my name with my children. I didn't know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to go, this is our family name."

Apparently, this is a break from tradition, which could be a sign of other things to come as Meghan and Prince Harry continue to manage their relationship with the other members of the Royal Family.

Luckily, Mindy Kaling loved Meghan's explanation of her new surname and why she uses it. Judging by their recent IG posts and outings, we can assume that Serena Williams would support Meghan's line of reasoning as well.
