The Wicked Global Tour has begun as the cast of the upcoming Wicked has flown into Sydney, Australia for the premiere. The announcement was made on the Today Show Australia three weeks ago with the promotion being made public via the film's official YouTube page.
Since the official announcement was made, the film's leading ladies, Cynthia Eviro and Ariana Grande have started method dressing to reflect their characters.
As per Sky News Australia, upon their arrival in Sydney, the first stop of the tour, Ariana was seen dressed in all pink with Burberry heels as she walked through Sydney Airport with costars, Cynthia Erivo, who was dressed in olive green, Marissa Bode who plays Nessarose and Ethan Slater, Grande's boyfriend and costar who plays Boq, a munchkin who becomes the object of Nessa's affections.
There was no sign (that we know of) of director Jon M Chu or stars Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum, who were confirmed to be joining the cast on the tour. This announcement was made at the same time as the tour, as per Seven News Australia.
The actresses will likely continue their method dressing for the premiere too, so watch this space, Wicked fans. The lead-up to the film's release has seen Grande and Erivo influenced by their characters so much so that they have dressed in green (Elphaba) and pink (Glinda), respectively.
One such example was when Ariana and Cynthia were in France during the Paris Olympic Games where they wore their characters' signature colors.
Ahead of the Sydney leg of the Wicked Global Tour, Vogue Australia did a list of times throughout the last years in which the actresses honored their witchy counterparts.
What exactly is method dressing?
Method dressing has become a trend in recent years as a promotional gimmick for actors to promote the projects.
For example, Jenna Ortega has become well-versed in this as she method-dressed in the spirit of Wednesday Addams while promoting her hit Netflix series, Wednesday.
She also repeated the idea while promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, where she played Astrid Deetz.
Blake Lively has also done method dressing. She showed up to one of the premieres of her husband Ryan Reynolds' film Deadpool & Wolverine dressed in a red bodysuit. She voiced Lady Deadpool in the movie.
Lively also dressed in florals as a nod to her character Lily Bloom in It Ends With Us.
Method dressing is a great way to show how passionate an actor is about the role they've played. For example, Zendaya attended the Spider-Man Far From Home Premiere with red hair, a homage to Mary Jane Watson, the original love interest to Peter Parker in the Marvel Comics.
Zendaya played Michelle Jones-Watson in the MCU, a newish character known as MJ.
A massive example of method dressing is Margot Robbie while she was promoting Barbie. All of her looks were inspired by the original looks of the classic Barbie doll.
