Over the last 100 years we’ve seen plenty of vampires grace the screen. But one of the historical standouts is the 1922 silent film Nosferatu. Now, more than 100 years later, director Robert Eggers is delivering a new vision of the iconic character just in time for Christmas.

The film is based on the classic screenplay from Henrik Galeen and the novel from Bram Stoker. It takes the action back to Germany in 1838. We meet a newly married couple, Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) and his bride Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp). They are happy and Thomas’ career is about to take off as he’s sent to meet a wealthy and reclusive client, Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgaard), who is relocating to the area.

He leaves Ellen with his friends—Friedrich (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Anna Harding (Emma Corin). Ellen is worried about what might become of her when her husband is away, owing to some mental troubles as a young woman. When those troubles recur, the Harding’s get doctors involved. Dr. Sievers (Ralph Ineson) gets his former mentor, Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz (Willem Dafoe), involved in the case, and both begin to suspect darker aims at work.

When Thomas returns a changed man, he warns them of the danger Orlok poses. But is it too late to save Ellen and the rest of the people in the town from harm?

Nosferatu is an excellent gothic horror film

You don’t normally think of gothic horror on Christmas Day, but if you’re a fan you won’t find a better Christmas Day option than this. Eggers is a talented filmmaker with a specific style, and he plies those talents well with this film.

The look and feel here are incredible. This is one of the best crafted and best shot films of the year. The use of color and black-and-white adds to the tension. The framing and the shots add to the drama of the narrative. It is a visually stunning film that captures your gaze and won’t let go throughout its run time.

The film also features some exceptional performances. Depp is great in the lead role, pouring her heart-and-soul into what feels like a very physically demanding and emotional performance. I was also quite moved by Skarsgaard and the way he brings Count Orlok to life. His physical movements and his vocal inflections are incredible as he brings the dark menace to life on screen.

This has been a great year for horror and thriller films, and this film is the crown jewel coming at the close of 2024. This is one of my favorite films of the year and a must watch for fans of the genre or those that just love a beautifully crafted tale.

Nosferatu opens nationwide on Christmas Day.
