Are you looking for a movie to ring in the new year with? Do you want something that has a rich storyline, engaging premise, and is brilliantly acted? Then you may want to give the 2017 film Phantom Thread a watch.
While, you may not consider Phantom Thread a New Year’s movie, the reality is that this movie is a brilliant way to end 2024 and step into a new year. And one of the reasons for that is because it has an epic scene dedicated to ringing in a new year.
We get to see the party and celebration of people ringing in the new year, and at the same time, we get to see someone who is on the outside looking in. But that’s not all, because in this scene we watch as chaos erupts, as people’s inhibitions have lowered.
It is a brilliant depiction of the celebration that comes with saying goodbye to one year and welcoming in a new one. And there is no denying that this cast is perfect, thanks in part to Daniel Day-Lewis and Lesley Manville.
Phantom Thread may not be for everyone, but this is the kind of story that resonates with people. Set in the 1950s in London, this is the story of a brilliant fashion designer who has his demons. This is a man who struggles to connect with others, and yet when he comes across this woman in a restaurant, he is so enamored with her that in a lot of ways, she becomes his muse, even as his sister worries about what comes next.
And we get to watch as the relationship between this man and the woman who seems to inspire him develops throughout the movie. But there is tragedy in this relationship, and there is definitely some treachery. If you have not seen this movie, I will not give away what happens. All I will say is that there is a strong possibility that these two people truly deserve each other. And yet, one would almost have to say that they are the worst two people to be together.
This may not seem like a movie that you would expect to ring in a new year with. But somehow it works. And I know for me, that New Year’s scene was so well done and seems to perfectly capture that space in time when we say goodbye to one year, while looking forward to another, so that it resonates as a viewer. It made it clear for me that this movie would be a great choice for anyone looking for something different to watch as we say goodbye to 2024.
And honestly, the fact that it’s probably one of the last movies that Daniel Day-Lewis will act in, means that it’s definitely worth watching at least once.
