As the calendar turns to May, we enter the summer movie season. It’s a fun time for blockbusters, comedies, and a chance to escape the heat and see some of the biggest releases of the year. Below are five films coming this May featuring British performers, or stories, that you might want to check out! Films appear in chronological order.
The Fall Guy—May 3
About: We’re starting summer strong. This one is about a stunt man (Ryan Gosling) and the director (Emily Blunt) he wants so badly to impress. It’s got comedy, action, and plenty of fun stunt work. In addition to Blunt, Hannah Waddingham plays a central role in this film. This is a great way to start the summer season.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes—May 10
About: The second weekend in May brings the latest Planet of the Apes film. This is the fourth film in the modern franchise—but the first without Andy Serkis as Ceasar. This one takes a jump into the future where the planet is, mostly, ruled by apes. Among the few humans, British actress Freya Allan leads the cast in this blockbuster. This promises plenty of action as this franchise continues its on-screen journey.
Back to Black—May 17
About: Amy Winehouse is a remarkable singer who continues to compel listeners even years after her death. This new biopic—from director Sam Taylor-Johnson—seeks to explore her life, her rise to fame, her famous album, and her untimely death. Marisa Abela takes the lead as Amy, with the cast including Eddie Marsan, Leslie Manville, and Jack O’Connell. This is a different kind of summer film, but one worth checking out!
Furiosa: A Mad Max Story—May 24
About: This is another franchise getting an extension. This is the fifth Mad Max film, this time focusing on the character of Furiosa who was introduced in Mad Max: Fury Road. This time, the titular character is played by Anya Taylor-Joy in something of an origin story. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth and once again comes from director George Miller. This promises to be one of the biggest action films of the month.
Young Woman and the Sea—May 31
About: Daisy Ridley takes the lead here in this biopic from Disney. It’s getting a limited release to end the month and focuses on Trudy Ederle. In 1926, she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. This isn’t the typical kind of film you expect to see during the summer season, but it is a fun biopic that most American audiences probably know little about.
