You can take a man out of the skies, but you can't take the skies out of the man.

Last Friday, the Prince of Wales surprised everyone when he showed up during the launch of Oxford's Airbus Helicopters. Despite his tendency to stay busy as a royal, Prince William actually made this visit in a private capacity. This hinted that the former air ambulance pilot still has some fire left for his old trade.

Like many of his relatives in the Royal Family, Prince William is a fully credentialed pilot. In addition to his two-year stint as a pilot for East Anglian Air Ambulance, the Prince of Wales served honorably as a search and rescue pilot for the Royal Air Force. Aside from his time as a practitioner, the Royal currently provides his expertise as a patron of London Air Ambulance. His patronage gives him a chance to remain connected to the field despite his inability to pursue an active career in it.

Hello Magazine reports that Prince William visited another helicopter base in Wales before his unscheduled appearance in Oxford. During his prior stop, the Prince of Wales disclosed that he can't "stop talking about helicopters and medical kits and all sorts." The former pro clearly misses the skies, but there is always another way for him to stay close to piloting's more technical side while honoring his royal duties.

In a different article, Hello Magazine revealed that Prince George just took his first flying lesson! Prince William's eldest child flew with an instructor to learn about the inner workings of piloting and explore the skies from a different perspective. It will be a long time before the 11 year old can begin flying solo, but something tells us the Prince of Wales will be a happy man once the time comes!

If past trends remain true, Prince George will eventually have a piloting career of his own. As the young prince learns more about the craft, he will be able to lean on his father's expertise and bond with him over the art of travelling the skies. Ah, it warms out heart just thinking about it!
