Day two in the pool at the Paris Olympics was full of action. Among the featured races was defending two-time Gold Medalist Adam Peaty trying to win his third straight in the 100-meter Breaststroke.

Peaty is a decorated swimmer for Great Britain. He won the Gold Medal in the 100-meter Breaststroke at the Rio games in 2016 and repeated the feat in Tokyo in 2020. He also holds the current World and Olympic records in the event and came into Sunday’s finals as the top qualifier from the semi-finals. He was looking to win his third straight Gold Medal in the event, becoming the second man since Michael Phelps to win the same race in three straight Olympic games.

In the race, Peaty jumped out to a strong start and even maintained the lead about halfway through the final 50 meters of the race. In the end, it was Italian swimmer Nicolo Martinenghi who touched the wall first. The Italian won Gold in a time of 59.03 seconds.

Peaty wasn’t far behind. He touched the wall at 59.05 seconds, tying with American swimmer Nic Fink to take the Silver Medal.

Though he didn’t win Gold, it was still a strong showing from the 29-year-old Peaty who returned to competition in February after taking a protracted break for his mental health. He now has three Olympic medals, including three medals in relay events. Peaty is expected to be part of the Great Britain 4 x 100 medley relay next week.
