It is no secret that Queen Elizabeth II was loved by many members in her family; stories and tributes have followed continually in the wake of her 2022 passing. Lady Louise Windsor, daughter of Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie, is said to have had a close relationship with the late Queen and it has now been announced that she will continue a unique legacy in honor of that personal history.

For Queen/King and Country

Windsor is currently a student at St. Andrews' University, says Hello! magazine, and has "fallen in love" with the program of Army Cadets. At the age of 20, she is part of the St. Andrews University Officers' Training Corps, which allows for students to undergo paid military training. Among other things, this program will allow her to learn skills that will serve her well in a future military career.

What will that career look like? According to Louise, "I am interested in pursuing a career in the military, diplomacy, or law." While she is completing her studies at the university, her involvement in the UOTC will allow her to receive instruction that are "designed to fit around her degree." The program is one in which "cadets learn everything from how to wear a uniform to the ability to lead others in stressful situations." Whichever career she chooses, she will be well prepared for the challenges that accompany those roles. She has taken a step back from royal duties since beginning her studies in 2022, but there will be expectations of her in the future.

She is the first female royal to join the military since Queen Elizabeth II herself. In 1945, Lady Louise's grandmother became the first female member of the Royal Family to serve full-time in the Armed Services. She was part of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Princess Anne and Princess Catherine both hold honorary military titles, but Louise's ambitions to serve on a more full-time basis are a noble tribute to her grandmother's life.
