Gary Oldman shares his shocking thoughts on his portrayal of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies
Gary Oldman is an iconic actor. He has played any number of amazing characters on both the big and small screen, and even given us some legendary moments as historical figures as well. However, for a lot of people, he will forever be the magician Sirius Black from the Harry Potter franchise.
However, while we may think of Oldman as a truly brilliant actor, sometimes even the greats have their moments. And in a new podcast episode of Happy Sad Confused, Gary Oldman revealed his own thoughts on his portrayal of Sirius Black. And you might just be surprised by what he had to say.
It turns out that Oldman is not nearly as impressed with his turn as Sirius as we were. In fact, he seems to think he was just rather "meh."
Gary Oldman was not impressed with his own work in the Harry Potter movies
According to Deadline, this is what Gary Oldman had to say about his Harry Potter role:
"I think my work is mediocre in it. No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman, aka Prof. Snape], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently."
- Gary Oldman
However, we also have to say that we loved Oldman's portrayal of Sirius Black. And we can't imagine how he could have done any better with the role. Honestly, we can only imagine how things would have changed if he had in fact read the books and known more about his character.
All things considered, Gary Oldman is likely his own biggest critic. And he has even said that he, "It’s like anything, if I sat and watched myself in something and said, ‘My god, I’m amazing,’ that would be a very sad day, because you want to make the next thing better."
We can't help but agree that you want to continually push yourself and make yourself better in your work. But at the same time, we can't help but love the way that the actor brought Sirius Black to life and we don't think we would have changed anything.
But what do you think? Are you surprised by what Gary Oldman had to say?
