When Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2022, it meant that some members of the royal family received new titles. Obviously Prince Charles became King Charles, while his wife became Queen Camilla. And another royal couple also got new titles, Prince William and Princess Catherine.

When Prince William and Catherine were first married, they were granted the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. This meant that she was known as Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. However, a new report indicates that Prince William went to his grandmother and asked that his new wife be given the title of Princess.

According to Marie Claire, a royal courtier has revealed that "Prince William asked the Queen to make his wife a Princess upon their marriage." However, she denied that request.

Did the queen deny Prince William's request to have his new wife named as a princess early in their relationship?

According to the courtier, "He says he was born Prince William and wants to continue to be known as that. William also had views on the name Kate should have taken on." And it was up to Queen Elizabeth whether or not she would want to do this, because as monarch, she has the authority to bestow titles on people and members of her family.

It should be noted that it is exceedingly rare for the title of princess to be gifted to someone. Although it did in fact happen at least once, as the Duchess of Gloucester was restyled as Princess Alice by the queen after her husband's death. In part, the reason for this change in title had a lot to do with her service to the monarch and the work she had done for the queen. Basically, the title was a gift for years of loyalty and hard work.

Obviously the queen did not give the title of Princess to the then Duchess of Cambridge, but as we all know she does have the title now that Queen Elizabeth is gone. It makes sense that the late queen would not have bestowed the title of princess on Catherine at the time, as she had not truly proven herself to the monarch yet. And of course, it was inevitable that her title would get a boost in the future.

What do you think of this report that Prince William wanted his new wife to be given the title of princess early on in their marriage? Would this surprise you?
