There is something about a classic that resonates no matter when we read it. And for many fans of classical literature, Jane Austen is a must read. For some of us, it is all about Pride and Prejudice, while others may love Sense and Sensibility.
But what if you were such a big fan of Jane Austen and in particular the character of Mr. Darcy, that you thought that there is no way that real life can live up to the expectations of the novel? That is the question that permeates the new Hallmark original movie, An American in Austen. The movie is part of the Loveuary with Jane Austen event that Hallmark has been hosting throughout the month of February.
Hallmark is celebrating the works of Jane Austen with a Loveuary celebration that includes An American in Austen
In an effort to celebrate the works of Austen, Hallmark has been giving us some fresh looks at those classic works. But on February 17, they thought outside of the box and gave us An American in Austen. This is about a librarian who is obsessed with the Jane Austen work, Pride and Prejudice. When her boyfriend surprises her with a proposal, she ends up running off and falling asleep in the car on the way home. Instead of waking up in her own time and place, she finds herself in the novel she loves so much.
With the knowledge of what happens in the novel, she ends up befriending the Bennets and even capturing the attention of Mr. Darcy, the man she compares all other men to. The problem is that her presence in the novel is changing the story. And now she has to figure out what she really wants, a romantic fiction or the world and people she already knows and loves.
The beauty of this film is that it really is a love letter to Jane Austen and her work. It is a beautiful representation of just how often readers wish they could be a part of the stories that they read and love. And in a lot of ways, it is a reminder that sometimes real life really is so much better than fiction. We have the chance to make our lives the way we want them, even if that requires putting faith in others.
Hallmark knows how to deliver a delicious rom-com, as well as expertly crafted dramas. In this case, it feels like they combine romance, comedy, and drama for a perfectly balances film that honors Jane Austen and her work, while also thinking outside of the box of a retelling.
An American in Austen is a great watch and perfect for fans of Jane Austen, Mr. Darcy, and of course Pride and Prejudice.
