We’re into the time of the year where we start thinking about awards season. We’re getting some serious contenders and some beautiful and thought-provoking films. That’s certainly true of Conclave, the drama that debuted in late October and continues to make a strong showing at the Box Office.

The film is based on the novel from Robert Harris and comes to the screen thanks to director Edward Berger, who delivered the updated version of All Quiet on the Western Front in 2022. Here, he plies his skills to tell a tense story set in the world of the Catholic Church.

At the outset, the Pope has died. The Cardinals are called together, and it falls upon the Dean, Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), to organize a Conclave. This gathering of Cardinals will take place in sequestration as they determine who will next lead the church. Lawrence spends weeks preparing and as the Cardinals gather, factions begin to form.

Among the candidates are the conservative Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto), the popular Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati), the political Tremblay (John Lithgow) and Lawrence’s friend Bellini (Stanley Tucci). As the Cardinals descend, the campaigning begins, and it’s up to Lawrence to keep things on track.

Adding to his challenges are the arrival of an unexpected Cardinal—Benitez (Carlos Diehz)—and a few potential wrinkles when it comes to the viability of the front-runners. It’s up to Lawrence to get to the truth and keep the Conclave running on track as the future of the church is at stake.

Our thoughts on Conclave

As you might guess, this is a film that is predominately about men—and the occasional nun—talking in rooms. That can present a challenge when trying to build the tension and intrigue, but the filmmaking and storytelling here is top shelf. The script from Peter Straughn crackles and moves, with twists and turns that keep you engaged. But the real win here is the production.

The selection of shots from Berger captures the beauty of the space and the journey, and keeps the action visually engaging as you move through the dense story. The use of film techniques and an exceptional score also help to build the tension.

The film also thrives with some great performances. Fiennes is exceptional in the lead role, but the entire ensemble delivers on their roles. That includes Isabella Rossellini, who plays a crucial role as the lead Sister who helps Lawrence get to the truth of the Cardinals vying for the highest post.

Overall, this is a stirring and engaging drama that keeps you engaged throughout its run time. It delivers a fascinating story in a beautifully crafted film that is one of the best of the year. It’s worth taking time to seek out in theaters.
