On April 18, Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan took to her Instagram stories to make it very clear how she feels about J.K. Rowling and the latest news around the author. Recently news broke that the UK Supreme Court had ruled that trans women are not women, and unsurprisingly the anti-trans author decided that she needed to celebrate the news.
As part of her celebration J.K. Rowling shared a social media post where she was "toasting the news" with a cigar in hand. And Coughlan wasn't having it.
Nicola Coughlan shared an article image of the author with a headline that read, "This is a new low for J.K. Rowling." And underneath that imagery she wrote her own message, which read "keep your new Harry Potter lads, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole."
Nicola Coughlan says you can keep Harry Potter after latest anti-Trans news from J.K. Rowling
According to Page Six, after the ruling from the UK Supreme Court came down, Coughlan shared a video where she made it clear how "horrified" she was by the news. "To see an already marginalized community be further attacked — and attacked in law — is really stomach-turning and disgusting. And to see people celebrate it is more stomach-turning and disgusting."
On top of speaking out against both the ruling and Rowling, Nicola Coughlan also worked to raise funds for a charity that helps trans individuals called Not a Phase. And all things considered, it is clear that she not just an ally, the actress is truly an advocate.

Sadly, there are still plenty of negative comments on her post, but there is also plenty of support for her words and the call to action. Overall, while there are certainly a number of anti-trans comments on her video, there seem to be many people praising her for how she is using her platform.
As fans of Nicola Coughlan, we appreciate how she is being a voice for a marginalized community. And hopefully more big names speak up and speak out.
